Fix an expired Microsoft Teams session in Franz
Fix Microsoft Teams expired sessions in Franz by refreshing login, completing MFA, and using Delete caches and reload when Teams gets stuck.
Back to SupportMicrosoft Teams sessions can expire when Microsoft or your organization requires a fresh sign-in. Franz keeps the Teams service available, but Microsoft controls the account session and any Microsoft 365 security prompts.
Reload Teams first
If Teams shows a session expired message in Franz, reload the Teams service first. In many cases Microsoft refreshes the session and returns you to Teams automatically.
Wait for the reload to finish before clicking through multiple login prompts. Reloading several times in a row can restart the Microsoft sign-in flow.
Sign in again and finish MFA
If the message remains, sign in again with your Microsoft work or school account. Complete any organization prompts, including multi-factor authentication, device compliance checks, account selection screens, or "stay signed in" choices. Keep the Teams service open until the redirect has fully returned to Teams.
If your company uses several Microsoft tenants, add Teams as a separate Franz service for each tenant. That keeps sessions and unread badges clearer than signing in and out of one shared Teams service.
Know when policy controls the session
Some companies set short session lifetimes for Teams and Microsoft 365. Franz cannot extend those policies. If your organization requires re-authentication every day or after a period of inactivity, Teams will ask for sign-in again even when Franz is working normally.
Use separate Microsoft Teams services if Teams is part of a broader Franz workspace with more than one tenant.
Use Delete caches and reload when Teams says to close all windows
Teams sometimes shows a state where it says you are logged in, but asks you to close all windows before continuing. That instruction is written for a browser or the standalone Teams app. In Franz, closing every app window is usually not practical because it would interrupt the rest of your services.
For that specific message, right-click the Teams service icon in the Franz sidebar and select Delete caches and reload. This clears the stuck Teams web session for that service and reloads it without clearing every other Franz service.
Use this option for a stuck Teams session, not as a routine first step for every Microsoft sign-in prompt. It signs Teams out and makes you complete the Microsoft login again.
